The fresh fruit on Kauai is bountiful. Half the point of going to a farmers' market was to try fruit that was totally foreign to us. We had fun in other ways, too - drinking Mai Tais in the rain, pretending to be eaten by dinosaurs, and taking pictures with funny props.

My Mom Got a Herbie Tattoo
posted on 15 May 2012, 6:00 am
For several years now my mom's been saying she wanted to get a tattoo -- a hummingbird -- because she liked them so much. BUT every time she was visiting me, and I'd find a tattoo shop for her to get it done at (because she insisted I had to be there), she would chicken out....

Minimalist Monday: No Regrets, part 2
posted on 14 May 2012, 1:00 pm
Earlier today, my sister Courtney shared a post that she had written about relationships and friendships. Like a true sister, she wrote it the same time I wrote this, and neither of us knew what the other was doing!
The last few years have been a mad dash for me. Every morn...

Kauai: The Water
posted on 14 May 2012, 10:14 am
Kauai is an island. Duh. I'm sure you knew that already. But the best part about visiting an island is the water. The water surrounding Kauai was gorgeous, but moody; aquamarine liquid that glistened in the sunlight but raced toward the shore under the moon. It was powerful ...

Banana Walnut Mini Muffins. (Almost) Classic. Vegan.
posted on 13 May 2012, 10:07 pm
Maybe you've noticed, but I've been on a bit of an obsessive muffin blitz lately. I can't help it! That cool fall air hits my face, a crisp drizzly rain prances across the soggy streets and all I want is a fresh-from-the-oven muffin. That muffins-baking-aroma that warms the ...

Some Thoughts for Mother’s Day 2012
posted on 13 May 2012, 9:53 am
There is no better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than by putting an end to your support of the exploitation of nonhuman mothers represented by milk, cheese, and other dairy products.
A cow raised for her milk is forcefully impregnated yearly, and her babies are taken away ...

This Week's Q&A (Talking Diabetes, Pineapples & More!)
posted on 12 May 2012, 7:00 am
You've got questions, I've got answers!
1. I was looking at the Pineapple Sponge Cake recipes on Pg. 256 in EHH, and was wondering why you call for canned pineapple rings instead of canned crushed pineapple when you end up crushing them anyway?
The pineapple rings come wit...
